I'm traveling light, it's au revoir…

Uneasy Thrill of AI

Yesterday, I came across a meme that really stuck with me… because it’s true.

The improvements in AI both excite and scare me. For example, when my Copilot subscription expired last year, I initially thought I’d go back to the old-school way for a while. That lasted about a day. It had already changed the way I code and build things. These days, ChatGPT is always open in one of my browser tabs. It’s become as constant as Google.

Using AI as leverage to boost productivity is genuinely exciting. Early last year (never published this), I managed to build a working iOS app despite my very limited React Native skills. If I were to recreate that app today, I’d probably ship it in a fraction of the time. That’s the beauty of it — turning an idea into a product has never been more accessible.

But it also comes with a downside. The entry barrier has dropped so much that we’re about to see an explosion of “AI… generator” apps like never before. In that kind of environment, whoever handles marketing best will win, which is the part I find a bit frustrating.

When engineering takes a backseat and it becomes all about who the best marketer is, we risk entering an era of celebrating mediocrity. Things like “vibe coding” and other trendy nonsense might become the new norm.

We’ll see how AI ends up shaping our future. Since I already wear multiple hats, I’m not too worried. It even helps me work better. Still, time will tell where this is heading. I think we’ll see a ChatGPT-style leap in robotics in the next five years. We’ll see…
